"Dreams are the touchstones of our character." (Henry David Thoreau)
A flat stone with a rough texture allows marks to be made on it's surface by soft metals. This was a method used by gold miners to determine the purity of gold. A standard would be set by marking a line of pure gold on the stone; all other ores found could be measured by comparing it's mark to the standard. That stone became a touchstone. Our ambitions, our motivations, our dreams say much about us. They reveal our inner most desires and highlight what we esteem to be of great value. This is how our dreams might help us determine the purity of our character.
My hope is that, in the process of becoming, when I mark my character on the touchstone of my dreams that I will find pure gold.
While reading your post I thought of Elder Oaks talk from last April "Desire".
ReplyDelete"Desires dictate our priorities, priorities shape our choices, and choices determine our actions. The desires we act on determine our changing, our achieving, and our becoming."
It is easy to lose focus and become distracted in worldly dreams. What a blessing that we can pray to Heavenly Father! If we ask in humility he will help shape the desires of our hearts in a way that would inspire us to reach for dreams that lead us to becoming like Him.
Gorgeous! That's so true! It's interesting that our desires and aspirations can change and improve, which will lead to an improved character.
ReplyDeleteHm. I love you :)
